Jordan Daily – Over 6,259 refugees left Jordan for resettlement in third countries this year, according to the UNHCR as of October. In October alone, around 790 refugees departed, with 50 leaving for family reunification or special programs.
Since the resettlement program’s launch in 2014, more than 76,000 refugees have been resettled, including 10,761 last year. The highest number, 21,499, was recorded in 2016. Currently, around 111,000 refugees in Jordan need resettlement, about 14% of the registered refugee population. However, only 1% are eligible due to limited spots.
Resettlement provides a durable solution for refugees who cannot integrate locally or return home. UNHCR continuously reviews vulnerable cases to assess eligibility for resettlement based on shared and collected data.
As of this year, 8,880 resettlement applications have been submitted, up from 8,536 in 2023 and 7,166 in 2022. Resettling countries offer protection, language training, and support to help refugees integrate and eventually obtain permanent residency or citizenship, UNHCR pointed out.
