Academics call for reform amid concerns over higher education integrity

Jordan Daily – More than 100 academics from Jordanian universities issued a statement on Wednesday expressing deep concern over the state of higher education in the country, citing declining global rankings, weakened academic integrity, and serious flaws in evaluation standards.

The signatories stressed that recent remarks by the Minister of Higher Education- acknowledging the poor performance of Jordanian universities in global rankings and integrity benchmarks- confirmed what many in academia have been warning about for years.

They pointed to recent leaks alleging that questionable research- in some cases linked to individuals in senior university positions – has harmed the reputation of Jordanian institutions and led to their inclusion on international “red lists” for research misconduct.

The statement criticized university administrations for a lack of decisive action, internal power struggles, and a failure to address misconduct involving research incentives, promotions, and hiring practices.

In response, the academics called for a national conference led by an independent academic body, free from political and administrative interference, to restore the credibility of higher education and uphold the dignity of faculty members.

They also urged the Integrity and Anti-Corruption Commission and university boards to launch transparent investigations and hold accountable those who have turned academic institutions into platforms for personal gain rather than centers of learning.
