Jordan Daily – Aqaba Governor Khaled Al-Hajjaj revealed that minor damage occurred at Aqaba Church, the world’s oldest church, due to the fall of a construction crane on Saturday during restoration work at the site.
Al-Hajjaj said that the damage to the church building is very minimal and easy to repair, noting that 80% of the damage has already been cleared and the work will be completed today.
He added that the crane was carrying iron bridges at the site as part of the restoration work, and during the operation, one of the bridges fell, causing the accident. Five people sustained minor injuries and have all been discharged from the hospital.
The governor also mentioned that the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities and the Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority are working on preparing the site to include the church in the city’s tourism routes.
It is worth noting that Aqaba Church dates back to the third century AD and is considered the oldest church in the world.
