Aqaba workshop pushes SDG localization through research-policy link

Jordan Daily – The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) in Jordan and Italy’s Center for International Political Studies (CeSPI ETS) hosted a workshop in Aqaba to advance localization of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The meeting, held under the Knowledge and Scientific Network (KSN) initiative of the Italian foreign ministry and linked to the UN Local2030 Coalition, gathered more than 30 representatives from government, academia, civil society and the private sector, UN-Habitat said in a statement received by Jordan Daily.

Chaired by Dr. Nedal Ouran, Commissioner for Environment and Public Safety at the Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority, the event featured presentations on projects addressing smart cities, waste management and marine ecosystems, aligned with SDGs 11, 14 and 17. A session on SDG localization examined links to Jordan’s national commitments and showcased tools ranging from art and podcasts to multi-stakeholder initiatives.

“Through the Knowledge and Scientific Network, we aim to bridge academic research with the real needs of communities and cities, transforming knowledge into practical solutions that can deliver tangible impact on the ground,” said Eng. Deema Abu Thiab, Head of UN-Habitat Jordan.

Participants called for stronger partnerships and continuous dialogue to speed up systemic transformations and support Jordan’s sustainable development efforts as Aqaba, the country’s only coastal city, seeks to balance economic growth with environmental protection.
