Jordan Daily – The Embassy of Azerbaijan in Jordan commemorated in a statement March 31 as the Day of Genocide of Azerbaijanis, remembering the mass killings and ethnic cleansing carried out by Armenian forces.
The statement seen by the Jordan Daily, recalled that on this day, thousands of Azerbaijanis were killed for their ethnic and religious identity, with over 16,000 victims and 167 villages destroyed. Armed groups linked to the Baku Council carried out these massacres in cities like Baku, Shamakhi, and Guba.
The embassy also highlighted a 1918 investigation into these crimes, leading to criminal cases against 194 Armenians. However, legal proceedings were halted due to Soviet occupation.
Azerbaijan officially recognized March 31 as Genocide Remembrance Day in 1998, through a decree signed by national leader Heydar Aliyev. Since then, Azerbaijan has campaigned for international recognition of the atrocities as genocide.
The statement also pointed to the continued suffering of Azerbaijanis, citing forced displacement during Armenia’s occupation of Azerbaijani territories and the 44-day war, where civilian areas were targeted by missile strikes.
On the 107th anniversary of the March Massacres, the embassy called for justice for the victims and accountability for perpetrators of crimes against humanity.
The statement concluded by reaffirming Azerbaijan’s commitment to international law and regional peace efforts, emphasizing its active participation in diplomatic initiatives to foster stability in Asia.
