Damascus to send troops to Sweida, urges calm amid escalating clashes

Jordan Daily – The Syrian presidency on Friday called on all armed groups in Sweida to exercise restraint and prioritize dialogue, amid escalating clashes between Druze factions and Arab tribes in the country’s south.

The violence erupted following the withdrawal of government forces under a locally brokered agreement. Since Sunday, deadly confrontations have taken place between Bedouin tribes and Druze groups, with reports of retaliatory attacks and civilian displacement.

In a statement, the presidency expressed “deep concern” over the bloodshed, blaming “unlawful armed groups” for exploiting the security vacuum and threatening civilian lives.

“Syria stands firmly for civil peace and the rule of law,” the statement said, rejecting all forms of revenge and collective punishment. It condemned attacks on civilians and warned that violations of humanitarian values would not be tolerated.

The presidency confirmed the dispatch of a specialized security force to contain the violence and pledged parallel political and security efforts to restore stability.

Three ceasefire agreements have been announced so far, the latest on Thursday, facilitated by Arab and U.S. mediation. However, fighting resumed Friday after a Druze-affiliated group reportedly expelled Sunni Bedouin families.

The government emphasized that it represents all Syrians – Druze, Bedouin, and others – and urged unity under the national framework of law.

“All citizens of wisdom and responsibility must join hands to overcome this ordeal,” the statement concluded, calling for an end to incitement and protection of Syria’s long-standing social fabric.
