Dialogue sessions review 2024 parliamentary elections, provide key recommendations

Jordan Daily- The Netherlands Institute for Multiparty Democracy, in collaboration with the Independent Election Commission (IEC) and the Arab Network for Civic Education (ANHRE), concluded a series of local dialogue sessions in Amman to evaluate the 2024 parliamentary election process.

The sessions, held across all governorates, were part of the “EU Support to Political Reform in Jordan” project, funded by the European Union and implemented by the Expertise France in partnership with local stakeholders.

The project focused on reviewing the 2024 parliamentary elections and gathering key lessons and recommendations as part of a comprehensive program aimed at supporting Jordan’s political modernization.

The program works with national partners, including the IEC, the Ministry of Political and Parliamentary Affairs, the House of Representatives, political parties, and media institutions, with the goal of strengthening Jordan’s democratic processes. It emphasizes inclusivity, accountability, and enhancing opportunities for women and youth to actively participate in political and civic life, while supporting democratic institutions to function more efficiently.

The dialogue sessions, which concluded with a final session in Amman, involved in-depth discussions on the context and circumstances surrounding the 2024 elections. Participants reviewed the election process and identified key lessons and recommendations from civil society activists, political party representatives, youth, media professionals, local councils, authorities, and experts.

Approximately 900 participants shared their experiences and perspectives on the election procedures, their participation, and their confidence in the results. They also examined the legal and legislative frameworks governing the elections and proposed improvements to strengthen electoral integrity, democracy, and fair political representation.

These sessions followed the first elections conducted under the recommendations of the Royal Committee for Political Modernization. Despite challenges, the IEC efficiently managed the elections in line with legal deadlines, reflecting the government’s desire to engage citizens in the political process through participation in elections, public consultations, and political parties as part of Jordan’s broader political modernization roadmap.

The outcomes of these consultations, along with practical recommendations, will be submitted to the IEC to guide future steps in the political reform process and help Jordan achieve its democratic aspirations.
