€36.5 million in German grants to bolster Jordan’s water infrastructure

Jordan Daily – Minister of Planning and International Cooperation, Zeina Toukan, signed two financing agreements with the Director of the German Development Bank’s (KfW) Jordan office, Dr. Matthias Schmidt-Rosen, on Sunday

The signing took place in the presence of Minister of Water and Irrigation Raed Abu Saud and the German Ambassador to Jordan Bertram von Moltke.The agreements, provided by the German government through KfW, aim to support the country’s water and sanitation needs.

The first agreement, a €21.5 million grant, will fund improvements to water and wastewater infrastructure in northern Jordan. The second, a €15 million grant, will help finance the Aqaba-Amman desalination project, bringing Germany’s total contribution to €80 million.

Minister Toukan, thanked Germany for its continued support. Germany’s ambassador reaffirmed his country’s commitment to helping Jordan address its water challenges.

Water Minister Abu Saud highlighted the importance of the two grants in helping Jordan’s water sector address its challenges. He praised Germany’s support for the Aqaba-Amman water carrier project, which he described as one of Jordan’s most critical strategic projects.

Ambassador Moltke underscored Germany’s recognition of the significant challenges Jordan faces in the water sector, reaffirming his country’s commitment to supporting Jordan’s efforts. He noted that the German financing complements ongoing cooperation between the two governments in this field.
