Egypt debunks Suez Canal sale rumors

Jordan Daily – The Egyptian Cabinet issued an urgent statement on Saturday, dismissing rumors circulating on social media that the government plans to sell the Suez Canal for $1 trillion.

The Cabinet’s media center reported that it had contacted the Suez Canal Authority, which categorically denied the claims. The authority stated that the rumors are unfounded and that the audio clip in question is fabricated, according to the Egyptian newspaper Youm7.

The Suez Canal Authority reaffirmed that the canal remains under Egyptian sovereignty in terms of management, operation, and maintenance. It emphasized that the Suez Canal will continue to be fully owned by the Egyptian state, with all canal staff, including employees, technicians, and administrators, being Egyptian citizens.

The authority highlighted that the canal and its facilities are constitutionally protected under Article 43 of the Egyptian Constitution. This article mandates the state to protect, develop, and maintain the Suez Canal as an international waterway owned by Egypt, while also committing to the development of the canal sector as a significant economic zone.

In a broader context, the authority urged Egyptians to disregard such falsehoods and rumors, emphasizing the importance of obtaining information from credible sources.
