Jordan Daily – The Embassy of Malaysia in Amman today hosted a reception to celebrate the 58th anniversary of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). The event, presided over by His Excellency Mohamad Nasri Abdul Rahman, Ambassador of Malaysia to Jordan, was a testament to the enduring unity and shared vision of the regional bloc.

The celebration was attended by a host of distinguished guests, including the Ambassadors of Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Thailand, and the Philippines, along with other ASEAN member states’ nationals residing in Jordan.

The programme commenced with a solemn ASEAN Flag Raising Ceremony, followed by a singalong of the ASEAN Anthem, symbolising the shared identity and purpose of the member states.

In his welcome speech, Ambassador Mohamad Nasri highlighted ASEAN’s remarkable journey over the past 58 years, noting its growth from five to ten member states and the upcoming admission of Timor-Leste as the eleventh.

Attendees also had the opportunity to learn about ASEAN’s rich history and culture through an exhibition showcasing the Association’s impressive 58-year journey.

“The strength of ASEAN lies not just in its longevity but in its steadfast commitment to its core principles,” said Ambassador Mohamad Nasri. “This commitment is embodied in the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation, to which 57 countries have become contracting parties, a clear sign that the world regards ASEAN’s voice as a voice of reason and stability.”

The Ambassador also underscored ASEAN’s role in global affairs, its unified stance on pressing international issues. He highlighted the ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ call for an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza and for accountability for violations of international law.

Highlighting Malaysia’s ongoing role as the ASEAN Chair in 2025, Ambassador Mohamad Nasri stated, “Under our theme, ‘Inclusivity and Sustainability,’ we are committed to fortifying ASEAN centrality and driving a people- centered agenda. This includes initiatives such as the ASEAN Year of Skills 2025, which aims to empower our citizens, especially young people, to seize the opportunities the region has to offer. This people-centered approach is key to building a vibrant, connected community.”

The formal ceremony concluded with a ceremonial cake-cutting and a video montage that showcased the region’s diverse cultures and achievements.
