EU Election Observation Mission deploys 28 long-term observers

Jordan Daily – The European Union Election Observation Mission (EU EOM) has deployed 28 long-term observers across Jordan in preparation for the country’s parliamentary elections scheduled for 10 September. The observers, who will monitor the entire electoral process, received in-depth briefings in Amman on Jordanian electoral laws, the political environment, and other key topics before their deployment.

Chief Observer Željana Zovko, a Member of the European Parliament from Croatia, is set to visit Jordan next week.

Delphine Blanchet, the Deputy Chief Observer, provided further details on the scope of the mission. “The long-term observers will cover all 12 Governorates, including both urban and rural areas,” Blanchet explained. “They will observe the entire electoral process before, during, and after the vote. Our observers will be meeting with electoral officials, candidates, representatives of lists and alliances, civil society, and the media.”

Blanchet highlighted the mission’s methodology, stating, “The EU EOM conducts a thorough analysis of the electoral process, focusing on elements such as the legal framework, the work of the election administration, campaign activities, media conduct, voting, counting, and the tabulation of results, as well as the resolution of election-related disputes. Our mission is impartial and does not interfere in the electoral process.”

The mission will be reinforced by 38 short-term observers arriving shortly before election day, bringing the total number of observers to over 100. These observers hail from EU Member States, Canada, Norway, and Switzerland and will focus on the voting, counting, and tabulation processes on 10 September.

The EU EOM will issue a preliminary statement shortly after election day and remain in Jordan until the end of September. A final report, including technical recommendations for future elections, will be published later.

Invited by Jordan’s Independent Election Commission, the EU EOM operates independently from EU institutions and member states. The mission is committed to adhering to the Declaration of Principles for International Election Observation and the Code of Conduct for International Election Observers, as well as Jordanian laws and regulations.
