EU expresses concern over Israeli plans to invade Rafah

By: JD News Desk

Jordan Daily – The European Union urged Israel on Friday to refrain from a ground offensive in Rafah, the southern Gaza city where more than a million Palestinians are sheltering from the fighting, warning of a humanitarian disaster.

The EU said it recognises Israel’s right to self-defence, but called on it to avoid military action that would worsen the situation and hamper aid delivery.

“We are very concerned about the Israeli government plans for a possible ground operation in Rafah,” the EU said in a statement.

“The EU asks the Israeli Government not to take military action in Rafah that would worsen an already catastrophic humanitarian situation and prevent the urgently needed provision of basic services and humanitarian assistance.”

The statement repeated the EU’s demand for Hamas to release all hostages immediately and unconditionally.

It added the EU’s Foreign Affairs Council will discuss the situation in the Middle East at its meeting next Monday,
