EU-funded border management training center handed over to Jordan

Jordan Daily – The European Union has officially handed over the Integrated Border Management Training Center (IBMTC) in Aqaba to Jordanian authorities, marking the completion of a joint project aimed at improving the country’s border management capabilities.

Implemented by the International Centre for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD) under the EU Support to Integrated Border Management in Jordan project, the Center will serve as a dedicated training hub to enhance border management capabilities, strengthen inter-agency coordination, and improve operational effectiveness.

“The European Union is committed to supporting Jordan’s efforts to further improve its border management system, in challenging regional circumstances,” EU Ambassador to Jordan Pierre-Christophe Chatzisavas said in a statement.

“Inter-agency coordination, well-trained personnel, and state-of-the-art equipment are key to guarantee security and smooth circulation of people and goods,” Chatzisavas noted during the handover ceremony attended by Khalid Al Hajjaj, Aqaba Governor.

The IBM TC, located within the Jordan Customs Employee Building, has been refurbished with a total investment of €507,000. It features two modern training rooms, an 80-seat theatre, offices for trainers, accommodation facilities, and a secure server room. The theatre will also be available for use by Jordan Customs and for training sessions.

With the Centre now operational, Jordanian authorities will integrate it into their border management training efforts. The IBM TC is expected to play a key role in professional development, enhancing institutional cooperation, and supporting Jordan’s broader efforts to modernise border management in line with international best practices, the statement concluded.
