EU marks 10 years of Madad Fund with Amman event, signs new UNHCR, WFP agreement

Jordan Daily – The European Union on Wednesday marked the 10th anniversary of its Regional Trust Fund in Response to the Syrian Crisis, known as the Madad Fund, with a flagship event in Jordan highlighting a decade of support for millions of Syrians and their host communities.

Launched in December 2014, the fund has mobilised €2.38 billion from 21 EU member states, the United Kingdom and Türkiye, providing assistance to more than 12 million people in Lebanon, Jordan, Iraq and Türkiye.

Over the past decade, more than 120 projects have been financed, delivering aid in education, healthcare, livelihoods, water and sanitation, protection and social cohesion. Key results include enrolling over 1 million children in school, providing quality healthcare to 5.8 million people, safe water to 2 million, livelihoods support to 1.5 million, psychosocial services to 500,000, and inclusion programmes reaching more than 1 million.

“The Madad Fund is not only a success story, it is also a living proof of what solidarity can achieve,” said Dubravka Šuica, EU Commissioner for the Mediterranean. “With 2.4 billion Euro, we have touched over 12 million lives, delivering essential services and hope where they were needed most. We have built and upgraded 16,000 schools … hospitals, and community centres that will serve generations to come.”

Henrike Trautmann, Head of the EU’s Middle East Directorate, said: “For the past ten years, the EU Regional Trust Fund has been a lifeline for millions affected by the Syria crisis. This anniversary is not only a time to reflect on our joint achievements, but also an opportunity to reaffirm the EU’s steadfast commitment to supporting Syria and its people.”

Today’s event, hosted at Amman’s Swafieh Village, gathered institutional leaders, programme partners, beneficiaries and the public. A morning session featured panel discussions on lessons learned and future EU assistance, while the afternoon included workshops, live testimonials and a cultural programme showcasing Syrian and Jordanian artists.

Alongside the commemoration, the EU Delegation to Jordan signed a new €22.85 million agreement with UNHCR and the World Food Programme to address urgent needs of vulnerable refugees and host communities, while promoting self-reliance.

The EU said the anniversary was not only a chance to look back, but also to reaffirm its role as a partner in “building pathways towards stability, dignity and hope” for Syrians and their neighbours.
