Jordan Daily – Senate President Faisal Fayez met with Ulrich Lechte, a member of the German Bundestag and foreign policy spokesperson for the Free Democratic Party (FDP), on Thursday to discuss enhancing bilateral relations between Jordan and Germany, with a particular focus on economic cooperation and joint investments.
During the meeting, Fayez highlighted the significant economic challenges Jordan faces, largely due to the influx of 1.3 million Syrian refugees. He noted that the burden has been compounded by declining international support for Syrian asylum, stressing that Jordan cannot continue to shoulder these challenges unaided.
The discussion also covered the escalating violence in the Middle East, particularly the Israeli actions against Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. Fayez called for urgent international intervention to ensure Israel’s compliance with recent UN Security Council and International Criminal Court resolutions. These resolutions demand an immediate halt to hostilities and unrestricted humanitarian aid access to Gaza.
Fayez reiterated the warnings of King Abdullah II regarding the potential for further regional instability if the aggression continues. He urged for a political solution to end the Israeli occupation, advocating for a just and comprehensive peace based on a two-state solution that would establish an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital.
In response, Lechte underscored Germany’s view of Jordan as a key stabilizing force in the turbulent Middle East. He affirmed Germany’s commitment to supporting Jordan’s critical role in the region.
Lechte also expressed concern over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, emphasizing that lasting peace can only be achieved through a negotiated two-state solution.
