Jordan Daily – Former Irbid Mayor Nabil Koufahi on Monday voiced strong criticism of the government’s decision to dissolve municipal and governorate councils, calling it unjustified and premature.
“We were shocked by the dissolution… long before the legal term expired and without acceptable justification, despite the councils being at the peak of their performance,” Koufahi said in an official statement.
Koufahi, who was re-elected in 2022 with a record-breaking vote count, highlighted his decades-long commitment to public service. He said his current term focused on ambitious development plans, backed by millions of dinars in strategic funding, despite financial pressures following the COVID-19 pandemic.
He cited progress in improving governance, reducing costs, and advancing infrastructure projects, including paving contracts and others awaiting ministry approval.
While acknowledging challenges and limited powers, Koufahi said the Irbid municipality had overcome major obstacles and maintained transparency and rule of law.
“Public service is an honor, not a privilege,” he said, vowing to continue serving citizens. He also thanked Irbid residents, municipal staff, and council members for their support.
