Jordan Daily – A delegation from the Georgian Parliament, led by Nikoloz Samkharadze, Chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee, visited the land allocated by Jordan for the construction of a Georgian Cultural Center at the Baptismal Site of Jesus Christ, the Parliament of Georgia said in a statement.
“During the course of our visit, we engaged in discussions with the Jordanian authorities, seeking to maximize the extent of their assistance to the construction process,” Samkharadze said, according to the press release.
The delegation also toured archaeological excavations underway at the site of the 11th-century Georgian Shihan Monastery. Samkharadze emphasized the importance of ongoing preservation efforts, stating: “It is historically confirmed that the Shihan Monastery is one of those established by Georgians on the Holy Land, emphasizing the crucial importance to sustain the excavation efforts for preserving the traces of Georgian cultural heritage in Jordan.”

The parliamentary delegation included Davit Matikashvili, head of the Georgia-Jordan Parliamentary Friendship Group and chairman of the Committee on Procedural Issues and Rules; Irakli Kadagishvili, member of the Foreign Relations Committee and chairman of the Regional Policy and Self-Government Committee; and Levan Makhashvili, member of the Foreign Relations Committee and chairman of the European Integration Committee.
The Georgian lawmakers expressed their gratitude to the local archaeological authorities and inquired about future plans for the site, the statement said.
