Jordan Daily – The German Federal Foreign Office has pledged an initial 20 million euros to the World Food Programme (WFP) and an additional 5 million euros to the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) in 2024, aiming to sustain life-saving cash assistance and health services for Syrian refugees in Jordan.
The German Ambassador to Jordan, Dr. Bertram von Moltke, expressed gratitude for Jordan’s ongoing solidarity with Syrian refugees. “Thirteen years into the Syria crisis, host countries like Jordan remain at the forefront of the regional refugee response. Germany acknowledges the continuous needs of refugee and host communities and will persist in supporting Jordan through its humanitarian and development cooperation,” he said in a statement released by the German Embassy Amman.
Alberto Correia Mendes, WFP’s Representative and Country Director in Jordan, welcomed Germany’s contribution. “This vital contribution from Germany has arrived at a critical juncture to prevent the suspension of assistance for all out-of-camp beneficiaries. However, our available funding is insufficient to sustain the assistance to all eligible refugees, and WFP needs to stretch resources and prioritize support to the most vulnerable refugees in camps and communities,” he stated.
Dominik Bartsch, UNHCR’s Representative to Jordan, emphasized the timeliness of Germany’s contribution , stressing “It will help those refugees who depend on assistance in their struggle to make ends meet. We count on other donors to follow to avert the resurgence of a humanitarian crisis in Jordan.”
