Jordan Daily – Former U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris writes in a new memoir that President Joe Biden was unable to show the same empathy toward Palestinians in Gaza as he did toward Ukrainians after Russia’s 2022 war, according to excerpts published by Axios on Tuesday.
In 107 Days, an account of her failed 2024 presidential campaign, Harris says her White House bid was damaged by Biden’s unpopularity, driven partly by what critics saw as a “blank check” he gave Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to respond to Hamas’s Oct. 7, 2023, attack.
“I had pleaded with Joe, when he spoke publicly on this issue, to extend the same empathy he showed to the suffering of Ukrainians to the suffering of innocent Gazan civilians,” Harris wrote. “But he couldn’t do it: While he could passionately state, ‘I am a Zionist,’ his remarks about innocent Palestinians came off as inadequate and forced.”
Harris also writes that protests against the Gaza war influenced her choice of a running mate on the Democratic ticket.
Axios said the memoir appears to contradict Biden-era White House statements that he and Harris had no disagreements over Gaza. A Harris spokesperson declined to comment, while a Biden spokesperson did not respond, the outlet reported.
Harris wrote that Netanyahu dismissed Biden’s loyalty to Israel and preferred to see Republican nominee Donald Trump return to the White House.
The book, whose title refers to the duration of Harris’s campaign after Biden ended his reelection bid, was released on Tuesday.
