Jordan Daily – Helvetas Swiss Intercooperation, in collaboration with the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) and Ministry of Environment, hosted a major climate change event in Amman on Monday.
The event, titled “Climate Change: Insights from IPCC,” gathered experts, policymakers, and activists from across the Middle East to discuss urgent climate actions and Jordan’s role in tackling climate challenges.
The workshop, held at the Fairmont Hotel, focused on global, regional, and national climate issues, with sessions addressing critical sectors such as food security, energy, and water. The event aimed to provide participants with a deeper understanding of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) process and engagement opportunities.
Key speakers included Rupa Mukerji, Director of Advisory Services at Helvetas and a lead author of the IPCC’s 5th and 6th Assessment Reports, who presented findings from the IPCC’s latest report, highlighting the global impacts of climate change.
Mufleh Al Alaween, Regional Water Cooperation and Diplomacy Advisor at the Swiss Embassy to Jordan and Iraq, discussed the effects of climate change in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, drawing from the IPCC report.
Prof. Jawad Al-Bakri, a member of Jordan’s technical committee for the 4th National Communication Report, outlined the country’s progress in addressing climate change. Practical solutions were explored by Ms. Mukerji and Dr. Arjumand Nizami of Helvetas, who shared insights from their work on climate-resilient projects in over 35 countries.
A panel discussion featuring Jordanian experts in food security, energy, and water sectors provided local perspectives on addressing these challenges. The final session focused on empowering young researchers, offering insights into the workings of the IPCC and encouraging their involvement in the upcoming 7th Assessment cycle to bolster Jordan’s engagement in global climate processes.
The event underscored the importance of collaboration between international and local stakeholders to drive climate actions that ensure a sustainable and resilient future for Jordan.
