Jordan Daily – The Chairman of Jordan’s Independent Election Commission (IEC), Musa Maaytah, briefed the ASEAN ambassadors of Thailand , the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei on Sunday regarding the commission’s preparations for the upcoming parliamentary elections scheduled for September 10.
During the meeting at the commission’s headquarters, Maaytah highlighted that the elections will be conducted under a new electoral law designed to enhance the participation of women and youth in Jordan’s political life. He emphasized the commission’s ongoing efforts to empower these groups in line with the country’s broader political vision.
Maaytah outlined key amendments to the electoral and political party laws, noting the increase in seats allocated for women (quota) in local lists to 18 seats. Additionally, he explained that 41 of the 138 seats in the 20th Parliament will be reserved for political parties, accounting for 30 percent of the total. This percentage is set to increase to 50 percent in the 21st Parliament and stabilize at 65 percent in the 22nd Parliament, aligning with the royal vision of transitioning from individual to programmatic collective work.
He also discussed Jordan’s experience in managing electoral processes and the benefits gained through the exchange of expertise with various electoral administrations. Maaytah expressed appreciation for the interest shown by ASEAN Ambassadors in Jordan’s political modernization efforts.
The ambassadors commended the advancements made by the commission in refining and improving the management of electoral processes and expressed their willingness to enhance cooperation, particularly with electoral bodies in their respective countries.
