Jordan Daily – Indonesia’s President-elect Prabowo Subianto said the government is prepared to bring in some 1,000 Palestinian refugees from Gaza and send them to Islamic boarding schools in East Java to further their education.

The proposal, first brought up by the former governor of East Java Khofifah Indar Parawansa, would be submitted to President Joko Widodo for consideration, Mr Prabowo – who is the current defence minister – was quoted as saying by Antara news agency on Jun 7.

The newly elected President and Defense Minister of the Republic of Indonesia, Subianto, who arrived in Amman today, is scheduled to participate in the Emergency Humanitarian Response Conference for Gaza, which will be held tomorrow, Tuesday, at the King Hussein Bin Talal Convention Center in the Dead Sea.

It is not yet known how the technical implementation of accepting refugees from Gaza will be, but Mr Prabowo said he would coordinate with the secretary-general of the United Nations and other state leaders regarding the proposal.

According to Mr Prabowo, apart from East Java, several public figures in West Java have also expressed their readiness to accept refugees from Gaza and place them in Islamic boarding schools – also known as pesantrens – for their education.

There are over 39,000 Islamic boarding schools in the country, according to 2023 data from the ministry of religious affairs.
