Jordan Daily – Iran’s former Foreign Minister and Vice President for Strategic Affairs, Mohammad Javad Zarif, outlined Iran’s vision for peace in the Middle East, emphasizing the need for global cooperation and a shift in regional and international policies.
In an article published in Foreign Affairs on Monday, Zarif called for a new approach to diplomacy, stressing that lasting peace in the region can only be achieved through multilateral dialogue and respect for sovereignty.
He argued that external interventions, particularly those by the United States and its allies, have exacerbated conflicts, including in Yemen, Syria, and Iraq, and called for an end to foreign military presence in the region.
Zarif’s remarks come amid heightened tensions in the Middle East and global calls for a more inclusive and less interventionist foreign policy.
Zarif, who served as Iran’s foreign minister from 2013 to 2021, also criticized the U.S. withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal in 2018, which he said undermined global trust in diplomacy. He reiterated Iran’s commitment to the agreement, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), and expressed hope that future negotiations could lead to the deal’s revival.
Iran’s strategy for peace, according to Zarif, involves not only fostering regional cooperation but also engaging in dialogue with the West. He emphasized that diplomatic solutions, rather than military escalation, are essential for resolving ongoing conflicts.
Zarif concluded by stressing the importance of mutual respect in negotiations and the necessity for all parties to adhere to international law.
