Israel demands buffer zone amid escalating tensions in Lebanon

By : JD News Desk

Jordan Daily – The Lebanese newspaper Al-Akhbar reported that Washington has sent a brief message to Lebanon’s Speaker of Parliament Nabih Berri and Prime Minister Najib Mikati, stating that the doors of diplomacy are now closed, and no further negotiations are possible.

According to the paper, Mikati later received follow-up communications from U.S. officials, reiterating that “Washington can no longer restrain the Israelis, and there is nothing more to be done.”

Informed sources indicated that recent developments are expected to alter the agenda, with the prospect of French mediation now being discussed.

Additionally, sources revealed that a flurry of U.S., European, and Arab messages were sent to Berri, Mikati, and even Hezbollah, conveying a direct Israeli demand to close the support front to Gaza as a precondition for de-escalation.

These messages reportedly carried veiled threats, warning that “no one will be able to pressure Israel if Hezbollah refuses to stand down.”

Meanwhile, it was announced that Turkey and Qatar have entered the mediation effort with Hezbollah, and sources disclosed that a delegation from both countries is expected to arrive in Beirut, presenting an initiative of their own—though notably, it carries no guarantees from Israel.

The sources emphasized that these communications converge on one key point: Israel is determined to create a 10-kilometer buffer zone devoid of any population or structures and will not back down from this objective. The only viable solution, according to these messages, is to return to the implementation of U.N. Resolution 1701, with the concessions Israel is demanding. Any refusal, the sources warned, will only lead to further strikes and escalation.
