Jordan , Lebanon discuss measures to reduce tensions on Lebanese-Israeli border

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Ayman Safadi, discussed in a phone conversation on Friday with his Lebanese counterpart, Abdullah Bou Habib, efforts aimed at easing tensions in southern Lebanon.

During the call, Safadi expressed concern over the potential for Israeli attacks on Gaza to escalate and spread to the occupied West Bank, Lebanon, and the broader region. He stressed the urgent need for the international community to take swift action to prevent further escalation along the Lebanese-Israeli border, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding Lebanon’s boundaries, sovereignty, and security.

Safadi underscored the necessity of adhering to relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions, particularly Resolution 1701, to halt the escalation and prevent the region from descending into another conflict that could threaten regional and global peace and stability.

He reiterated Jordan’s full support for initiatives aimed at de-escalating the situation and affirmed the kingdom’s solidarity with Lebanon, highlighting the commitment to its security, stability, and the safety of its citizens.

Warning of the real and growing risk of the conflict escalating due to ongoing Israeli aggression against Gaza, Safadi pointed to the humanitarian crisis facing the Palestinian people and the international community’s failure to halt the aggression and compel Israel to comply with international humanitarian law and international law.

Bou Habib emphasized Lebanon’s reliance on the support and solidarity of its Arab neighbors, particularly Jordan, as well as the United Nations and the international community, to counter increasing Israeli threats. He reaffirmed Lebanon’s steadfast pursuit of diplomatic solutions and mediation efforts to fully implement Resolution 1701. This includes an immediate cessation of Israeli military attacks, the establishment of internationally recognized borders, and an end to violations of Lebanon’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Both ministers reiterated their commitment to supporting the Lebanese army and emphasized the importance of achieving a diplomatic resolution to the ongoing tensions.
