Jordan seeks extension of Iraqi crude oil supply agreement

By : staff writer

Jordan Daily  – Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources announced on Sunday that the halt in importing Iraqi crude oil coincides with the expiration of the memorandum of understanding (MoU) for crude oil supply, signed between the Government of the Republic of Iraq and the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan on May 4, 2023.

Eman Awwad, the Director of Oil and Natural Gas in the Ministry, stated that the Ministry of Energy has contacted the Iraqi Ministry of Oil for approval to extend the MoU for an additional three months, under the same contractual terms, effective from the expiration date of the MoU on May 4, 2024. This is to complete the transfer of the contracted quantities for the current MoU, as it is extendable upon mutual agreement.

Awwad added that the Ministry is vigorously following up with the Iraqi side and the Jordanian embassy in Baghdad to issue the necessary approvals from the Iraqi side for the extension.

She clarified that procedures will be initiated to sign a new MoU once the full contracted quantities stipulated in the current MoU have been transferred.

It should be noted that the quantities of oil imported from Iraq constitute about 7% of the Kingdom’s crude oil needs.
