Jordan, Syria to hold tech forum in Damascus as reconstruction prospects grow

By : JD

Jordan Daily – Jordan and Syria are set to hold a joint technology forum in Damascus later this month in a move signaling warming economic ties amid Syria’s early reconstruction phase.

Khalil Al-Haj Tawfiq, chairman of both the Jordan Chamber of Commerce and the Amman Chamber of Commerce, said that the forum was requested by Syrian authorities and will highlight cooperation in information technology and rebuilding efforts.

“Jordan possesses strong capabilities in the IT sector and is ready to help Syria rebuild its infrastructure and key sectors,” Haj Tawfiq said, noting that reconstruction is gaining momentum following a partial easing of U.S. sanctions.

He said Syria’s return to stability is a strategic interest for Jordan and emphasized the country’s potential role as a regional hub for reconstruction efforts. “Syria needs everything right now, and the Arab world must be at the forefront of supporting its recovery,” he added.

A Jordanian commercial delegation visited Damascus in May, where Syrian officials expressed gratitude to Jordan for hosting refugees and reiterated that the reconstruction file is open to all, not exclusive to any one nation.

According to official trade data, Jordan’s exports to Syria jumped 520% in January year-on-year to 18.6 million dinars , while imports from Syria dropped 9% to 4.8 million dinars during the same period.
