Jordan Daily – Jordan expects to complete the second phase of its electrical interconnection project with Iraq by the end of July 2025, National Electric Power Company (NEPCO) Director General Sofian Bataineh said on Wednesday.
Bataineh noted that NEPCO teams have completed 95% of the civil works for the project and are continuing to install electrical equipment and conduct necessary tests.
Jordan began supplying Iraq with electricity in late March 2024 under the first phase of the interconnection between the two countries. The initial phase has a supply capacity of 40 megawatts, reaching the Iraqi town of Rutba. The second phase will extend the connection to the town of Al-Qaim, Bataineh added.
In February 2024, Jordan and Iraq signed the first amendment to their power sale agreement, enabling Jordan to supply Iraq’s Rutba area with 40 megawatts of electricity at a voltage of 132 kilovolts.
Upon completion of the second phase, Jordan’s total electricity supply to Iraq will reach approximately 150 megawatts. With further expansion, the capacity could increase to 500 megawatts in the medium term, Bataineh said.
