Jordan ,U.S. discuss efforts for ceasefire in Gaza and rising tensions in West Bank

Jordan Daily – Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Ayman Safadi discussed ongoing efforts with U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Wednesday to reach a prisoner exchange deal that could lead to a permanent ceasefire in Gaza. These efforts are being spearheaded by the United States, Egypt, and Qatar.

In a phone call, Safadi and Blinken also addressed the alarming escalation in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem and its holy sites, emphasizing the urgent need for effective measures to halt the deteriorating situation, Jordan News Agency ,Petra reported.

Safadi reiterated Jordan’s support for efforts to secure a prisoner exchange and stressed that stopping the Israeli aggression on Gaza is the top priority and a necessary first step toward de-escalation, which is crucial for regional security and peace.

Safadi also underscored the importance of halting all illegal Israeli actions in the West Bank, as well as violations of the historical and legal status quo at Islamic and Christian holy sites in occupied Jerusalem. He warned that these actions undermine all chances for peace.

Jordan, he stated, is preparing the necessary legal files to take action in international courts against these violations, which are clear breaches of international law and dangerous escalations that Jordan will confront by all available means.

Secretary Blinken reaffirmed the U.S. position on the importance of respecting the historical status quo at the holy sites. Both ministers also discussed cooperation in ensuring that sufficient and immediate humanitarian aid reaches Gaza to address the unfolding crisis in the region.
