Jordan Daily – Jordanian engineer Dr. Husam Alissa has led a major Microsoft-backed study published in Nature, one of the world’s most prestigious scientific journals, marking a significant milestone in the field of cloud computing and environmental sustainability.
The study, spearheaded by Dr. Alissa, explores the environmental and energy impacts of large-scale data centers used for cloud computing and artificial intelligence (AI). The research places a particular emphasis on the challenges of cooling high-performance chips such as CPUs and GPUs, and optimizing resource use to reduce environmental footprints.
In response to the study’s findings, Microsoft announced that it would incorporate the research outcomes to improve decision-making in the development of future data centers. CEO Satya Nadella confirmed that the tools and algorithms developed in the study will be released as open-source, in a move aimed at encouraging broader collaboration in sustainable technology.
Dr. Alissa is a prominent Jordanian expert based in the United States. He earned his bachelor’s degree from the Hashemite University and a master’s degree from Jordan University of Science and Technology. He later completed his PhD at the State University of New York at Binghamton, where he authored a book on data center cooling system design. He is currently a leading figure on the Systems Technology team at Microsoft’s headquarters in Seattle, Washington.
His work has received numerous international accolades, including:
- Data Center Dynamics Award for Critical Technical Innovation
- IEEE Micro Top Picks Award
- IEEE Electronics Packaging Society (TCPMT) Best Paper Award
- ASME InterPACK Outstanding Paper Award
Dr. Alissa holds a prolific record of over 70 scientific publications and more than 140 registered or granted patents, reinforcing his status as a global leader in cloud infrastructure and sustainability research.
