Jordan Daily – Kindi Hospital held a specialized lecture last Thursday focused on the latest procedures for combating childhood obesity and related dietary interventions. The event, part of the hospital’s ongoing scientific activities, took place at the main conference center and was organized in collaboration with the Arab Engineers for Trading Medical Equipment & Supplies.
Dr. Tarek Abdelghani Rabaiya and Ms. Bushra Al-Bitar, clinical nutrition specialist and prenatal yoga instructor, delivered the presentations aimed at enhancing knowledge and awareness to improve patient care quality at the hospital.
Dr. Rabaiya provided a comprehensive overview of childhood obesity, highlighting key symptoms such as shortness of breath, joint pain, excessive sweating, fatigue, gastroesophageal reflux, sleep apnea, and snoring. He emphasized the importance of early intervention and management.
He further discussed the potential health risks associated with untreated childhood obesity, including asthma, cardiovascular diseases, joint disorders, sleep disturbances, diabetes, and psychological conditions. Dr. Rubaie outlined preventive measures, stressing regular physical activity, a healthy diet, reduced fast food intake, adequate sleep, mental health support, and certain therapeutic interventions.
Ms. Al-Bitar addressed the causes and treatment of childhood obesity, noting maternal gestational diabetes as a significant factor contributing to insulin resistance in newborns, which predisposes them to weight gain. She also cited sedentary lifestyles, genetic factors, screen time, fast food consumption, and environmental and psychological influences. She advocated for healthy food alternatives, emphasizing the importance of taste and presentation to encourage acceptance among children.
