Jordan Daily – Former Minister of Information and Secretary-General of the Al-Methaq Party, Dr. Mohammad Al-Momani, made startling remarks during a symposium held on Saturday, alluding to the infiltration of political money into existing parties.
Al-Momani refrained from naming specific parties or divulging further details regarding this involvement, but he did assert that these infiltrations were under scrutiny and suggested that repercussions may include party members ending up in prison.
Al-Momani stated, ” I assure you … soon they (referring to those parties involved with political money) will go to prison.”
Engineer Musa Al-Maaytah, Chairman of the Board of Commissioners of the Independent Election Commission, addressed these concerns during a meeting on Sunday with General Secretaries of established political parties. Al-Maaytah emphasized that the commission is not vested with the authority to intervene in partisan stances or internal party practices. He acknowledged that certain circulating news and conversations could potentially create confusion and distort the outlook for party activities, both presently and in the future.
Al-Maaytah further elaborated that some of the circulating reports regarding limited partisan practices had the potential to erode public confidence in party engagement and impact participation rates in future general elections.
In response to Al-Momani’s statements, Dr. Rula Al-Hroub, Secretary-General of the Jordanian Labor Party, commented that political funds are commonly employed in party campaigns, party introduction efforts, and political endeavors worldwide. She clarified that illicit funds are typically used to influence election results by buying votes.
Al-Hroub cautioned Al-Moumni that if he has any information regarding parties violating the law, he should promptly report and submit it to the public prosecutor. Failure to do so, she noted, could implicate him as an accomplice in any alleged wrongdoing, according to the Penal Code.
