Jordan Daily – Most buildings in Jordan are not prepared to withstand earthquakes, Khaled Al-Shawabkeh , the head of the Jordanian Geologists Syndicate said.
In a televised interview covered by Jordan Daily , Al-Shawabkeh noted Jordan is one of the seismically active areas , with the potential for earthquakes to occur along the Gulf of Aqaba to the Dead Sea rift.
However, he said that the seismic activity in Jordan is not as strong as in other regions, as most earthquakes are caused by the collision or divergence of tectonic plates, while the Dead Sea is a meeting point of these plates.
Al-Shawabkeh said that the Ministry of Public Works is serious about implementing the Jordanian building code, which is designed to make buildings more resistant to earthquakes.
