Municipalities face debt and overdraft challenges, seek private sector partnership-minister

Jordan Daily – Deputy prime minister said on Wednesday that the ministry of local administration is supporting viable and job-creating investment projects in municipalities, after revealing that they have accumulated JD 200 million in overdrafts and JD 85 million in debt.

Tawfiq Kraishan, who is also the minister of local administration, said most of the municipal investments are in building warehouses that were rented to citizens without regular collection of rent, resulting in large financial arrears.

He made the remarks during a visit to West Irbid municipality, where he opened a new building and several development and service projects, and met with heads of other municipalities in Irbid governorate.

Kraishan said the ministry’s support for municipal investment projects is conditional on cooperation with the private sector, noting that the completion rate of projects in the municipalities and governorate councils ranged between 60% and 90%.
