Jordan Daily – Agriculture Ministry denied on Monday that it has any role in exporting tomatoes to Israel, after Israeli media reported that the kingdom had shipped 500 tons of the crop in one week.
The ministry said in a statement that it only issues import licenses and does not regulate exports, which are handled by private sector exporters who have access to 26 markets around the world.
It added that most of the vegetable and fruit exports to Israel were transit shipments to Europe via the port of Haifa, or destined for the West Bank, and that they accounted for only 3.1% of the total exports.
The ministry reaffirmed its adherence to the official government position on Israel, which has been strained by conflict over Jerusalem and the Palestinian issue.
