Jordan Daily – Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani arrived in the Syrian capital Damascus on Thursday, marking the first visit by a head of state to the country since the fall of Bashar Al-Assad.
The Emir was received at Damascus airport by Syria’s interim president, Ahmad Al-Sharaa, who led the welcoming delegation.
Earlier in January, a senior U.S. official and a high-ranking diplomat had revealed that Qatar plans to help fund a significant public sector wage increase pledged by the new Syrian government.
The official and the diplomat added that Qatar, which has long supported the armed uprising against former Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad, had been lobbying Washington to issue a sanctions waiver, allowing it to provide the funding through official channels.
