Safadi: Jordan cannot fill gap in funding for Syrian refugees, urges UN to reverse cuts

By:Nedal Zubeidi

Jordan Daily- Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi, confirmed on Thursday that the United Nations World Food Program (WFP) will cut its vital aid to Syrian refugees in the Kingdom as of August 1st.

In a series of tweets, Safadi said that other UN agencies and some donors are also reducing their support to Syrian refugees in Jordan , stressing that Jordan will not be able to fill the gap in funding, and that this will have a devastating impact on refugees.

The following is what Minister Safadi said in his tweets:

By August 1, #WFP will cut vital subsidies to Syrian refugees in Jordan. Other #UN agencies & some donors are doing the same. We’ll not be able to fill the gap.
Refugees will suffer.

This is not on Jordan. It is on those who are cutting support. We can’t carry this burden alone.

We urge WFP & others cutting subsidies to Syrian refugees to reverse decision. Providing dignified lives to refugees is a global responsibility. It is not ours alone as host country. UN must work to enable voluntary return. Until then, its agencies must keep sufficient support.

We’ll consult with regional host countries to hold a meeting to develop a joint response to declining support to Syrian refugees, including by #WFP & others, & measures to mitigate its impact. Burden of providing dignified lives to refugees cannot keep shifting towards us alone.
