Jordan Daily – Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ayman Safadi, wrapped up an official visit to Tehran on Sunday , where he engaged in high-level talks with Iranian officials, including a meeting with Masoud Pezeshkian.
The visit, made at the invitation of Iran’s acting foreign minister, underscored the delicate balancing act Jordan is navigating amid escalating tensions in the region.
Safadi delivered a message from King Abdullah II of Jordan to President Pezeshkian, focusing on the fraught state of regional affairs and the bilateral relationship between the two countries. In response, the Iranian president expressed his country’s desire to deepen ties with Jordan, stressing the importance of cooperation on multiple fronts.
The talks came at a particularly volatile moment, following the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh, the leader of the political bureau of Hamas. Jordan has denounced the killing as a “heinous crime” and a blatant violation of international law. The discussions also addressed the recent Israeli airstrikes on Beirut, which Jordan condemned as an infringement on Lebanon’s sovereignty and a breach of international norms.
Safadi’s visit to Iran, and his subsequent remarks to Iranian state television, underscored Jordan’s growing concern over the possibility of broader regional conflict. He called for an immediate halt to Israel’s military actions in Gaza, citing the need to protect the region from sliding into a wider war.
