Sharaa to address UN, ending decades-long Syrian boycott of Assembly

By : JD

Jordan Daily – Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa arrived in New York on Monday to attend the U.N. General Assembly, the first Syrian head of state to do so since 1967, his office said.

No Syrian president has spoken at the assembly since Nureddin al-Atassi, who led during the June 1967 war with Israel, after which Syria lost the Golan Heights. Damascus long boycotted the U.N., accusing it of pro-Israel bias.

Sharaa took office after Syrian factions ended more than six decades of Baath Party rule on Dec. 8, 2024, including 53 years under the Assad family.
