Sri Lanka eyes Jordanian olive oil and Dead Sea salts in new trade push

Jordan Daily – The Chairman of  Al-Salt Chamber of Commerce, Saad Bazbaz Al-Hayari, held talks on Wednesday with Sri Lankan Ambassador to Jordan, Priyangika Wijegunasekara, on strengthening commercial and investment cooperation between the two countries.

Al-Hayari, joined by the Mayor of Greater Salt Municipality, Engineer Mohammad Al-Hayari, emphasized the importance of enhancing collaborative opportunities to expand trade across various sectors.

He noted a significant increase in trade volumes between Jordan and Sri Lanka over the past two years, highlighting Jordan’s primary imports from Sri Lanka, which include textiles, tea, coffee, spices, and coconut. Meanwhile, Jordan exports iron products, furniture, chemical products, and apparel to Sri Lanka.

Ambassador Wijegunasekera underscored the progress made in Jordan-Sri Lanka relations, particularly in trade and investment.

She stressed the importance of further strengthening economic and trade ties, noting Sri Lanka’s considerable cooperation in industrial sectors and labor exchange, with Sri Lankan workers employed in Jordan’s industrial cities.

She expressed Sri Lanka’s interest in expanding the trade volume between the two countries , pointing to a demand in the Sri Lankan market for products such as olive oil and Dead Sea salts. Wijegunasekera also confirmed Sri Lanka’s willingness to facilitate Jordanian companies’ entry into the Sri Lankan market.

At the conclusion of the meeting, both parties agreed to organize joint economic events aimed at bolstering commercial and cultural cooperation, as well as facilitating educational exchanges to promote shared cultural understanding.
