Jordan Daily – A Syrian Information Ministry source denied reports on Sunday that President Ahmed Sharaa survived an assassination attempt during a recent visit to Daraa, state news agency SANA said.
Several media outlets had claimed that Syrian forces, in coordination with Turkish intelligence, foiled a plot by an alleged ISIS cell led by a Daraa resident. The suspect was reportedly detained a day before Sharaa’s visit.
French daily L’Orient-Le Jour, cited by Syria TV, reported Sharaa has faced at least two assassination attempts since taking office, including one in March.
The report said extremist groups, including ISIS, may be targeting Sharraa over reforms in Syria’s power structure, and are trying to recruit disaffected fighters from Hayat Tahrir al-Sham.
