Syrian parliament revokes membership of three lawmakers over dual nationality

Jordan Daily – The Syrian Parliament voted to revoke the membership of Dr. Anas Mohammad Al-Khatib, a representative from Damascus, after discovering that he holds Jordanian citizenship, a violation of the country’s constitution.

This marks the third expulsion of a parliament member within a month over dual nationality.

According to Al-Watan, a newspaper with close ties to the Syrian government, Al-Khatib was stripped of his position due to his possession of Jordanian citizenship, which is prohibited under Syrian law for members of parliament.

Earlier, the parliament had voted to remove businessman Shadi Dibsi, a representative from Aleppo, in October for holding Turkish citizenship. Days later, prominent businessman Mohammad Hamsho, representing Damascus, was also expelled after it was revealed that he, too, holds Turkish nationality.
