Jordan Daily – Ahmed Muwaffaq Zaidan, newly appointed media adviser to Syrian transitional president Ahmed al-Sharaa, has stirred controversy after urging the Muslim Brotherhood in Syria to dissolve itself, arguing the group’s current structure isolates it from the country’s post-Assad political landscape.
His comments sparked criticism from secular and nationalist opposition circles, who viewed the call as divisive. The move comes just weeks after Zaidan’s appointment in August, which analysts had seen as a sign of possible rapprochement between the new authorities and the Brotherhood, or at least with one of its former figures.
The presidency announced Zaidan’s role on Aug. 15 as part of institutional changes following the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime in December.
A former Al Jazeera correspondent, Zaidan is well known in opposition media and has long been associated with Islamist circles.
