Taiwan marks National Day, highlights strong economic growth

By : JD

Jordan Daily – Taiwan celebrated its 114th National Day on Thursday with a reception hosted by the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Jordan, where Representative Ali Yang highlighted Taiwan’s democratic achievements, economic strength, and growing partnership with Jordan.

Yang said Taiwan has undergone three peaceful transitions of power in the past two decades, underscoring the nation’s commitment to democracy and freedom. In January 2024, Taiwan held successful presidential and parliamentary elections, reinforcing its democratic credentials.

On the economic front, Yang noted Taiwan’s robust performance, citing international trade worth $869 billion in 2024 and a GDP growth of 4.6% to $797 billion. He said Taiwan remains a major global investor with nearly $500 billion invested worldwide, particularly in high-tech sectors.

According to the IMD’s 2025 Competitiveness Yearbook, Taiwan ranked sixth globally, up two spots from the previous year. Yang said Taiwan is working with like-minded nations to build secure supply chains, especially in semiconductors and communications, which he described as vital to global economic stability.

“Taiwan is not just an economic partner; we are a responsible global citizen,” Yang said, citing Taiwan’s humanitarian work in more than 30 countries through technical, medical, and disaster relief missions.

Yang praised the growing relationship between Taiwan and Jordan, built on shared values of peace, human rights, diversity, and rule of law. Bilateral trade reached $210 million last year, with Taiwan relying on Jordanian phosphate and potash fertilizers. He added that eight Taiwanese factories operate in Jordan, employing about 7,000 workers and contributing 6% of Jordan’s total exports, mainly garments.

He commended Jordan for its role in regional humanitarian aid, particularly for refugees. Taiwan, he said, has collaborated with the Jordanian government and aid organizations to support refugees and local families, including those affected by the conflict in Gaza.

Yang also highlighted increased exchanges between the two sides, including medical and trade delegations from Taiwan and Jordanian visits for business, education, and cultural cooperation.

The event concluded with guests enjoying Taiwanese cuisine, tea, and coffee, as well as a virtual reality experience provided by Taiwan’s HTC Corporation.
