Jordan Daily – The Government of Thailand has pledged an additional $50,000 to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) Gaza Flash Appeal 2024, in response to the ongoing humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip. This follows an earlier contribution of $80,000 made in October last year to the UNRWA 90 Days Gaza Flash Appeal.
In a statement, UNRWA welcomed Ambassador Supark Prongthura of Thailand and his delegation , highlighting the critical importance of this timely funding. The contribution will enable UNRWA to provide essential services, including water, food, and medical supplies, to Palestine refugees in the coming months.
“We are grateful for Thailand’s contribution at this critical time, in response to the dire humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip. It will allow us to purchase water, food, and medical supplies urgently required by the population in the Gaza Strip. The Government of Thailand has been a great humanitarian supporter of UNRWA and we are proud to be their partner in serving Palestine refugees in this hour of need. Your contributions will directly save human lives,” said Olaf Becker, Director of UNRWA Affairs in Jordan.
This donation aligns with Thailand’s longstanding humanitarian tradition and extends their support to UNRWA, which began in 1978. It also complements their multi-year voluntary contributions from 2022-2026, totaling $200,000, funding core UNRWA programs, including education, healthcare, and social protection services.
“Since the conflict in Gaza began on October 7, 2023, the continuity of UNRWA’s operations has been more important than ever. Thailand commends UNRWA for its dedicated efforts in spearheading the humanitarian cause in the Gaza Strip and beyond. Thailand joins the Secretary-General and other UN member states in appealing to the international community and all stakeholders to resume funding and continue to actively support UNRWA. We also reiterate our call for all parties to fully comply with their obligations under international law and the relevant UN Security Council resolutions, particularly regarding the immediate ceasefire, the release of all remaining hostages, including six Thai nationals, the protection of civilians and civilian objects, and the protection of humanitarian and UN personnel and humanitarian facilities and assets,” said Ambassador Prongthura.
UNRWA expressed deep appreciation for Thailand’s ongoing commitment as a donor, supporting the agency’s vital humanitarian work amid ongoing hostilities in the Gaza Strip and beyond, the statement noted.
