Trump envoy heads to Russia for talks with Putin

Jordan Daily – U.S. President Donald Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, will travel to Russia later this week for further talks with President Vladimir Putin, the White House confirmed on Tuesday.

Witkoff, a key figure in shaping Trump’s rapprochement with Moscow during his second term, has already held several meetings with senior Russian officials, including three with Putin. Russian presidential adviser Yury Ushakov confirmed the visit, calling reports of the trip “accurate.”

“We feel, again, we are hopefully moving in the right direction,” White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said. “The special envoy Steve Witkoff will be heading to Russia again later this week to continue talks with Vladimir Putin.”

The White House did not disclose Witkoff’s itinerary. The Financial Times reported he would skip meetings with European and Ukrainian officials in favor of his Moscow trip.

Washington is set to unveil its peace framework in London on Wednesday, following recent meetings in Paris. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio will not attend, with General Keith Kellogg representing the U.S. in ongoing discussions with Kiev.

The Washington Post reported U.S. proposals may include recognition of Crimea as Russian territory and easing sanctions. The Financial Times said Moscow could agree to halt fighting along current lines.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov warned of “a lot of fakes,” adding Moscow has also demanded that Kiev recognize not only Crimea, but also the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics, along with the Kherson and Zaporozhye regions, as part of Russia.
