Jordan Daily – The United Arab Emirates appointed an ambassador to Syria on Tuesday, in a sign of improving ties between Damascus and the Arab world.
Hassan Al-Shahi, the new Emirati envoy, handed his credentials to Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal Al-Mekdad in Damascus, Syrian state media said.
The UAE was among several Arab states that withdrew their diplomats and shut their embassies in 2011 as Assad’s forces cracked down on protesters demanding his ouster. But in recent years, some Arab countries have sought to normalize relations with Assad, who has regained most of the territory he lost in the war.
