Jordan Daily – During a visit to the Wihdat Camp for Palestine refugees in Amman, the UN Secretary-General António Guterres expressed the vital importance of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) in providing essential services to millions of Palestine refugees.
Amidst a Ramadan solidarity visit to Jordan, the Secretary-General’s visit included interactions with students and educators, witnessing firsthand the educational and healthcare services provided by UNRWA. He paid tribute to the 171 UNRWA staff members who lost their lives in Gaza, stating, “It’s cruel and incomprehensible – especially as we honour the 171 women and men of UNRWA who have been killed in Gaza – the largest number of deaths of UN staff in our history.”
In light of recent challenges, Guterres announced an independent review aimed at strengthening and improving UNRWA, reaffirming his commitment to ensuring that the agency upholds UN values. He emphasized, “I am determined to ensure that UNRWA abides by the values of the United Nations in all its actions.”
He called for continued support to maintain the hope and dignity that UNRWA represents for Palestine refugees in Jordan and beyond, concluding with, “Now more than ever, we must not take away that hope. You can count on me – and I count on all of you to keep spreading that hope and potential of Palestine refugees here at the Widhat Camp and far beyond.”
