Jordan Daily – The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has issued a dire warning regarding the escalating refugee crisis in Jordan, as nearly 240,000 refugees in the country received a total of $35 million in cash assistance during the first half of this year. The UN organization has raised concerns about the “serious consequences for refugees” if the funding crisis is left unaddressed.
According to a recent report, the UNHCR’s total cash assistance in the Middle East and North Africa region, spanning from January to June, reached a substantial sum of $106.99 million. This financial aid was distributed among approximately 1.95 million individuals, all of whom were beneficiaries of the assistance at least once during this period.
The situation in Jordan is alarming, as the UNHCR revealed that they have only managed to secure 32% of their financial requirements for the fiscal year 2023.
Dominik Bartsch, the UNHCR Representative in Jordan, expressed deep concern over the current lack of funding, emphasizing that it threatens to undo the significant progress made over the past decade in managing the refugee crisis.
Bartsch further elaborated that the shortage of funding may significantly impede the Jordanian government’s ability to provide essential health and education services to the refugees.
