Jordan Daily – The University of Jordan on Wednesday awarded Josep Borrell,Vice-President of the European Commission and High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, an honorary doctorate in international relations, recognizing his decades-long contributions to diplomacy and efforts to promote global peace and security.
Nazir Obeidat, the university’s president, said the honor reflected the institution’s commitment to acknowledging leaders who shape the international landscape. “Josep Borrell’s leadership and vision place him among the most influential political figures of our time,” Obeidat said.
Mr. Borrell praised Jordan for its role in maintaining regional stability and paid tribute to both King Abdullah II and the late King Hussein for making Jordan a symbol of unity and progress in the Middle East. He also lauded the country’s commitment to sovereignty, diversity, regional dialogue, and its steadfast support of the Palestinian cause.
Borrell addressed the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza, lamenting the toll on children, whom he said make up the majority of the victims. He cited the United Nations’ assessment of the situation as “a war on children and their future,” calling for urgent accountability and a renewed focus on human rights protections.
He emphasized the strong partnership between Jordan and the European Union, noting their shared vision for regional stability and economic growth. He reiterated the importance of ending illegal occupations, halting violence against civilians, and pursuing impartial accountability as essential to achieving peace.
Mr. Borrell also commended Jordan’s leadership in promoting the two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
